Visit the Mamertine Prison (Carcer Tullianum) - the prison where St. Peter was imprisoned

The Carcer Tullianum is one of the most fascinating monuments of the Roman Period. It is also one of the most secret places in Rome, and it is finally opening its doors to the public again!

This is a unique place that reminds us of the implacable justice of Rome against its enemies. Those who entered this prison never came out alive. It is also remembered by the Christian tradition as the place where Saint Peter and Saint Paul (considered ennemies of the Roman order) lived their last days.

You will be able to visit both floors of the Carcer Tullianum. The deeper level is the oldest one and dates back to the 7th century BC. The prison’s position was strategic: placed at the feet of the Capitoline Hill and in front of the Forum, the centre of public life, it was a clear warning sign, the symbol of the implacable justice of Rome against its enemies.
